The Oregon man who fatally stabbed two people on a train in Portland, Ore., also went on a racist rant on public transportation the night before the attack, according to a report.
Jeremy Joseph Christian, 35, was allegedly shouting racial slurs on a Portland light rail train Friday at two girls who appeared to be Muslim.
Two other passengers who tried to stop the verbal assault — Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche, 23, and Ricky John Best, 53 – were killed. Another victim, Micah David-Cole Fletcher, survived.
Christian had displayed similar violent behavior just the night before, KOIN 6 News reported.
A woman told the station she was riding the MAX Blue Line home from work Thursday night when Christian got on the train at Pioneer Courthouse Square and talked on his cell phone.
“He was pretty upset, squinting his eyes, venting to his friend on the phone about some girl that just pepper-sprayed him,” said the woman, identified as KK.
“He was complaining about the city, complaining about Muslims, Christians, and it just got very violent very quick,” she said.
KK said she felt there was “something really wrong” about the man, whom she caught on cell phone video.
“He was threatening to hurt somebody,” she said. “The talking was so violent and everybody was pretty scared… By the time we were at [the Gateway Transit Center], he was talking about wanting to stab somebody and gestured to pull something out of his pocket. Everybody around me got up, I was right behind him.”
He then exploded in a hateful tirade.
“You don’t like it? You got a problem with what I’m saying? F— all you Christians and Muslims and f— Jews , f— die! Burn you at the stake… f—- die!” Christian shouted, KOIN reported.
The driver was alerted about the rant but nothing was done to remove the man from the train, KK said.
After hearing about the deadly stabbing Friday, KK said she had a feeling the lunatic she had captured on video was involved.
“When I heard about the circumstances around it, that was the first thing that popped into my head, ‘I wonder if it’s the same guy from the night before,’” she said. “I felt that he was definitely looking for a fight of some sort that evening.”
Police confirmed that Christian was the man in KK’s video from Thursday night.
Christian — whose social media pages are filled with hate speech and images of himself giving the Nazi salute — has been booked on two counts of aggravated murder.
