Multi-vehicle pileups caused by a heavy fog forced the closure Thursday of the eastbound lanes of Highway 40 between Louiseville and Trois-Rivières.
The Sûreté du Québec decided to close the lanes after more than a dozen vehicles — including at least one truck — were involved in multi-vehicle collisions at various points within the affected stretch of road at 8 a.m.
No serious injuries were reported in any of the incidents.
SQ spokesperson Éloïse Cossette noted that it’s rare several multi-vehicle collisions occur at once, but added the fog was very thick on the stretch of road Thursday morning and also made driving difficult on secondary roads.
It remains unclear when the road will be reopened. Motorists heading to Quebec City from Montreal are advised to use Highway 20.
