The last killer whale to be born in captivity at SeaWorld died of suspected pneumonia on Monday, the company said in a statement.

Kyara, a 3-month-old calf, was born at the San Antonio park in April and faced progressive health issues not caused by being in captivity, according to the park.

Veterinarians say they provided around-the-clock care, treated her with antibiotics and hand fed her multiple times a day to make sure she received adequate nutrition. She was separated from her mother, Takara, and placed in a tank at the animal hospital.

“While the official cause of death won’t be determined until the post-mortem exam is complete, through monitoring Kyara’s behavior, and a physical examination, SeaWorld’s veterinary and animal care teams identified that she had an infection, likely pneumonia, that they were aggressively treating,” the park wrote on their website.

“Pneumonia has been identified as one of the most common causes of morbidity or illness in whales and dolphins, both in the wild and in aquariums,” SeaWorld added.

Kyara was the last orca born in captivity at the park after the company announced it would end its breeding program last year.

The company has been fighting with animal rights activists for years over its treatment of killer whales. Alleged animal abuse surrounding the park’s killer whale shows was highlighted in the 2013 CNN documentary “Blackfish.”

PETA lamented that Kyara “never got to swim in the ocean.”
